Why an Agro-Technology Program?

Some Facts:

The Philippine is basically an agricultural country. About 57% of its population lives in rural areas, where the poverty is more acute that in urban areas.

In the Philippines, the agricultural production increased in the years 1990-1998 by about 1.5% each year. At the same time, the Philippine population grew in a yearly average of 2.3%. It means that actual growth of the Philippine agricultural sector did not keep pace worth the population increase.

The average Philippine household income apportioned to food is 40%, compared to just 10 to 15% in developed countries. The percentage increases to about 60% with poor families, which make up about 40% of the population.

Conclusion:

There is a strong need to address poverty alleviation for youth in the rural areas and to increase production of nutritious food, especially for the poor who cannot afford to buy it.
